In this class you will use the versatile alphabet quilt pattern designed by Terri Carpenter to explore machine paper piecing techniques and materials to spell LOVE. We will also discuss general quilt design decisions in regard to color, value and fabric design placement. Geared towards beginners, you will expand your knowledge and expertise in this fun quilt technique while making a quilt top perfect to hang on the wall or use as a baby quilt.
Machine paper piecing is a technique that uses paper as a foundation to stabilize the quilt block as it is constructed. Once the quilt block is completed, the paper is removed. The technique is used to achieve precise, small and detailed piecing, and specific and unusual shapes that might not necessarily be achieved through traditional piecing. It can be applied to the simplest or complex quilt blocks or units.
Terri will have printed the all the paper templates you need to make the LOVE quilt. In addition, you will receive a PDF with the templates for the entire alphabet following the class.
This class is aimed at learning the skills. We prioritize enjoying sewing and gaining confidence over finishing the project. You will have completed at least one block and have the skills to complete this quilt top by the end of class.
Skill level:
This class is aimed at folks who have used a sewing machine and are comfortable sewing a seam.
Supplies: A complete supply list will be emailed when you register.
About the instructor:
Terri Carpenter‘s passion for sewing began with quilting (over 20 years ago!) and has evolved to include many different varieties of textile art. She currently enjoys expanding her handmade wardrobe, embroidery, quilt design and longarm quilting. When not at the studio, she enjoys being in the great outdoors getting inspired for her work. She loves to create things that fill people’s lives with cheer and beauty and enjoys helping others on their handmade journey as well.
Sewing Machines: If you would like to use one of the sewing machines at Ace Makerspace please select the Use Ace Machine ticket. If you are comfortable and would like to use your own sewing machine, please select the Use My Machine ticket. DO NOT purchase a Use My Machine ticket if you don’t have a machine, it isn’t working properly, or you aren’t comfortable operating it. We don’t have extra machines you can use. If we have sold out of Use My Machine tickets, and you want to use your own machine, you may purchase a Use Ace Machine ticket.

Quiet Dibs
Loud tools like the planer and tools that require use of the cyclone dust collection system can disrupt classes in other workspaces. When an instructor requests “quiet dibs” for their class it means that some tool use will be limited during that time. Check slack when planning your time to see if an instructor has requested “quiet dibs.”
