If you have always wanted to make your own garments, this is a great place to start.

Learn how to make the Shirt No. 1 by 100 Acts of Sewing.  This is a versatile, simple, loose fitting top with short sleeves that is easy to wear and makes a great layering piece. It is the perfect pattern for learning how to construct a shirt with a bias tape facing for the neckline and we like that it works for all genders. Made with a lovely Essex linen blend, it has a clean, casual look and works beautifully as a layering piece.

In this class you will learn how to:

  • Use a sewing machine

  • Read a sewing pattern

  • Mark and pin the fabric

  • Sew and press your garment including the bias tape facing

Skill level: ✂️

This class is open to every skill level.

Supplies: We will be making the shirt length version of 100 Acts of Sewing: Shirt No. 1. We are providing everything you need to make your shirt including a copy of the pattern so you can make more. You will receive pre-cut fabric that is sized for the chest measurement you give us when you sign up. This is a very relaxed fit shirt so sizing isn’t exact. The fabric will be a solid color Essex linen blend.

This video walks you through how to measure your chest (you don’t need to measure your waist or hips). Don’t have a measuring tape? Just use a piece of string and then measure the string.

Sewing Machines: If you would like to use one of the sewing machines at Ace Makerspace (we highly recommend this for begging sewists) please select the Use Ace Machine ticket. If you are comfortable and would like to use your own sewing machine, please select the Use My Machine ticket. DO NOT purchase a Use My Machine ticket if you don’t have a machine, it isn’t working properly or you aren’t comfortable operating it. In deciding whether to bring your own sewing machine, keep in mind that the textile studio is located on the 2nd floor. We don’t have extra machines you can use. If we have sold out of Use My Machine tickets, and you want to use your own machine, you may purchase a Use Ace Machine ticket.

Member Access to Space During Class

Ace Makerspace workshops where classes are taking place are closed for member use for the duration of that class.  Exceptions will be made either directly in the event description or on a case by case basis at the discretion of the instructor. If you have a question about whether or not you can access the space during class time please message the instructor or post on slack.

Quiet Dibs

Loud tools like the planer and tools that require use of the cyclone dust collection system can disrupt classes in other workspaces. When an instructor requests “quiet dibs” for their class it means that some tool use will be limited during that time. Check slack when planning your time to see if an instructor has requested “quiet dibs.”
