By Katie Harrell & Dan Bales
Come play and learn about the Adventures in Shadowland puzzle experience, a project born at Ace Makerspace. From designing puzzles to narrative creation to CNC pathways, Katie and Dan will share about their process for creating this unusual escape room for Burning Man 2024.
Katie Harrell has spent her life immersed in music and creativity. After studying composition in music school and playing keyboards in rock bands and Balinese gamelan ensembles, her journey took her to Bali on a Fulbright, where she delved into traditional Balinese vocal music and shadow puppetry. Today, Katie combines these passions in her original shadow puppet play, Wayang Earth, and by designing immersive experiences like the Adventures in Shadowland escape room. She has degrees from Stetson University and Mills College. She currently serves on the Ace Makerspace Board of Directors.
Dan Bales is a dynamic creator who merges his love for rhythm, community, and imagination into unique artistic projects. Growing up drumming and playing Dungeons & Dragons, Dan’s creative path eventually led him to the communal art of Balinese gamelan, sparking a lifelong exploration of collaborative music-making. His innovative spirit has brought forth gamelan-inspired sound installations like Reflective Resonance and Harmonic Drift. Through Adventures in Shadowland, Dan delves into his passion for puzzles and world-building to craft an immersive experience (which is sure to have gongs).

Arriving on time to class is very important.
For certification classes we are unable to accommodate late arrivals. If you arrive more than 10 minutes past the start time you will be unable to attend that day and your class fee is forfeit. For non-certification classes, your ability to participate will be based on instructor discretion.
Ace Makerspace workshops where classes are taking place are closed for member use for the duration of that class. Exceptions will be made either directly in the event description or on a case by case basis at the discretion of the instructor. If you have a question about whether or not you can access the space during class time please message the instructor or post on slack.
Quiet Dibs
Loud tools like the planer and tools that require use of the cyclone dust collection system can disrupt classes in other workspaces. When an instructor requests “quiet dibs” for their class it means that some tool use will be limited during that time. Check slack when planning your time to see if an instructor has requested “quiet dibs.”
The Planning Calendar
The Ace Planning Calendar is an internal tool used for scheduling events and space use with partners and teams. It is not an accurate reflection of confirmed and finalized events. Please use the calendar above as your source of truth.
