Special Guest Presentation

By Kurt Fleischer

Learn about cutting edge, innovative uses for familiar tools like laser cutters, 3d printers, and  knitting and sewing!

From Knitting Solid Objects to talking to microbes, the speaker will summarize nine of the projects presented at Siggraph 2024, the premier annual Computer Graphics conference.

  • A woman in Switzerland uses a laser cutter to fuse stripes on nylon sheets, which can then be inflated to customized shapes.
  • A second-year grad student in Pittsburgh has built a knitting machine like no other – it makes 3d solid knitting.
  • In Japan, 3d printed molds are carefully designed to shape transparent jellies with special optical properties – light refracting through them create custom caustic patterns.

About Kurt

Person in hat smiling outdoors.

As a kid Kurt did lots of arts and crafts. Still does. He was interested in technology, too. In high school he took two broken cars and made a (mostly) working one from them. In college, when he stumbled across Computer Graphics, it felt like a perfect fit. The field was new and he had the opportunity to work with wonderful people at places like Atari Research Labs, the Fairchild Artificial Intelligence Lab, Schlumberger, and eventually Pixar where he’s stayed for 29 years. He’s received degrees from Brown, Stanford and Caltech, and taken classes in our fabulous California community college system, from Foothill College, DeAnza, CCSF, Pasadena City College, Art Center College of Design, and currently Laney College. He’s worked on a lot of research projects at Pixar, including topics like inverse kinematics, non-photorealistic rendering, sketch-based systems, and novel approaches to character rigging. I look forward to trying something new.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

Ace Makerspace reserves the right to cancel class for any reason including low enrollment or instructor illness. If class is canceled we will contact you via email and issue a full refund. Depending on course availability, you may also have the option to transfer your ticket to a future class.

We do not offer credits, transfers, or refunds for student cancellations. You can offer  your ticket for sale to others in the comments or on slack. You are solely responsible for those transactions & letting us know who is taking your spot.

Late Arrival Policy

Arriving on time to class is very important.

For certification classes we are unable to accommodate late arrivals. If you arrive more than 10 minutes past the start time you will be unable to attend that day and your class fee is forfeit. For non-certification classes, your ability to participate will be based on instructor discretion.

Member Access to Space During Class

Ace Makerspace workshops where classes are taking place are closed for member use for the duration of that class.  Exceptions will be made either directly in the event description or on a case by case basis at the discretion of the instructor. If you have a question about whether or not you can access the space during class time please message the instructor or post on slack.

Quiet Dibs

Loud tools like the planer and tools that require use of the cyclone dust collection system can disrupt classes in other workspaces. When an instructor requests “quiet dibs” for their class it means that some tool use will be limited during that time. Check slack when planning your time to see if an instructor has requested “quiet dibs.”

The Planning Calendar

The  Ace Planning Calendar is an internal tool used for scheduling events and space use with partners and teams. It is not an accurate reflection of confirmed and finalized events. Please use the calendar above as your source of truth.
